I remember training with one of my top athletes a few years ago. We were training for competition and he grabbed my head in a headlock. I screamed bloody murder! Yeah, I've been in headlocks before. I know when they're supposed to hurt. And this one definitely should NOT have bothered me!


Another time an old workout partner visited me. We were working out when all of a sudden I found it hard to move my legs! Of course I stopped and within 20 minutes my whole back tightened up and I could hardly move. I needed chiropractic care for the next 2 months.


This last experience really put me in state of shock. One of my 12 year old students grabbed my neck while performing a self-defense move and I nearly dropped to the ground in pain. The kid was 12! Boy was that a wake up call.

During that time my wife, Cheyenne was researching different exercise programs. Now keep in mind Cheyenne has been an athlete all her life and has studied many forms of exercise. As a matter of fact she ran our Fitness Kickboxing program for many years.

The reason she stopped was because of the toll it was taking on her body. She always complained of knee and back pain. So this was a quest for her to look for something different...something better.


What she found out was astonishing! The workout and exercise programs that involved a lot of aerobic dancing, fast weight lifting, high-jumping and extreme ballistic stretching had the highest rate of injury.


At first I didn't believe it! But she very gently put things in perspective for me. She said Jim, your guilty of all those things and so am I. All the jumping around, crazy stretching, fast kicking and the weight-throwing that you call weight lifting is what's causing all of our pain and injuries. And worst of all were teaching it to others. Were going way to fast, we NEED change pace and slow down!


She told me "good science" and "research" showed that slow, controlled and technique based resistance training provided not only better results in a shorter time but it would keep your body healthy and injury free. As a matter of fact, research started in the early 80's on patients with osteoporosis who were so debilitated they couldn't go anything but slow. That study proved to be effective and resulted in every osteoporosis patient gaining back functional movement. 


I liked the idea but there was one problem. I just flat out didnt believe it. Sure the research and science sounded good but I'm a 'Doubting Thomas'. I need to see to believe.


So my wife and I spent 2 years correcting everything we thought we knew, and had to re-learn everything we could about proper exercise and fitness training. We started training slow with a 10 second pace. We made tons of notes. And even studied dietary and nutritional habits. When we first started training people it was more of a test phase to see what kind of results we would get. And we spent a lot of time studying and learning from the legendary Ken Hutchins- a real pioneer in the fitness industry, who coined the term "Super Slow" weight training.
